Cast Skeleton:
Pachyrhizodus caninus

3-D Skeleton Cast

Pachyrhizodous caninus

A rarely preserved giant predatory fish from North America’s late Cretaceous inland sea of 84 million years ago. The original specimen was disarticulated and nearly complete, making it a perfect candidate for three-dimensionalization. We used the same techniques as in our Xiphactinus cast, with technical guidance from leading paleontologists.

 Pachyrhizodous caninus, front
This beautifully detailed skeleton is the only one of its kind. Every intricate detail of the gill arches, hyoid apparatus, and palatine structures are reproduced in the skull. This skeleton also has a unique pathological feature. The teeth, usually very regularly spaced and uniform, are offset and irregular, with rugose bone lining the buccal surface of each dentary. An unknown disease or infection afflicted this individual.

This view shows its size in relation to an enthralled young man.

Pachyrhizodus remains have been found as
stomach contents of
Xiphactinus.
