Archaeopteryx lithographica
Panel Mount
24" l x 20" w x 14" h
[64 cm x 50 cm x 2 cm]
(Late Jurassic, Germany)
Part and counterpart of the holotype specimen of the earliest known bird as the "London" specimen.
Archaeopteryx is one of the most famous fossils. It shoes anatomical features of small meat-eating dinosaurs and of birds- a dramatic example of evolution in action.
Detailed impressions of the wing and tail feathers are preserved on the main slab showing that it was indeed a bird with almost modern wing feathers but that it still retained a long bony tail.
