Complete skeleton of this giant enigmatic and hoofed mammal. Arsinoitherium lived about 27 million years ago and belonged to an extinct group of browsing mammals called embrithopods. They were approximately the size of a rhinoceros and probably superficially resembled them. The spectacular pair of horns in front of the eyes may have been as much for display as defense The scientific name derives from the Egyptian queen Arsinoe whose palace was near the site of the discovery.
